Grass-roots celebration at the West Ward Collective’s first annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance: February 13, 2010.

The Pre-Valentine’s Day Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance was organized by Newark’s West Ward Collective as a way strengthen the relationship between fathers and daughters.  Hosted by West Ward Councilman Ron C. Rice, the dance was a night of elegance, fun, food, pride, and laughter for both the girls and their dads.

The Dance was held at North Star Academy in Newark and was organized for the Collective by Matt Stevens and Kym Gilchrist, who did a fantastic job decorating the hall and providing activities for the girls. Community sponsorship and support was provided by The Prince Hall Masons of New Jersey and volunteers from the Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi Fraternities. In addition, the teen mentoring organization Girls Plan was on hand to share their services.

The West Ward Collective is a non-profit organization founded by Councilman Ron C. Rice and directed by Rev. Darlene Reynolds to provide infrastructure change, resources, and support to West Ward residents of Newark.
