THE NEWARK MOSAIC combines new media with documentary production to create a dynamic portrayal of life in Newark.
Our goal is to create 30 original short videos in 2010, telling real stories of real people from this great city.
We are on a quest to discover and show the world diverse stories that challenge the stereotypes that typically define Newark in the mainstream media. Our stories acknowledge the challenges faced by Newark, but do not allow those challenges to define its people. We will look beyond the stereotypes and the challenges to discover the richness, the heart, the diversity, the dignity, and the humanity of the people of Newark. We are creating a space in our new digital media landscape where these stories can exist, circulate, inform, and inspire.
As the project grows in the coming year we will hold community-based media-production workshops encouraging Newarkers to become editors, directors, producers and active media users proudly telling their stories.
The Newark Mosaic has been created by Leo Aristimuño, who has previously produced numerous independent documentaries and teaches Media Studies and Video Production at Rutgers University in Newark.
The Newark Mosaic is supported in part by the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience at Rutgers University in Newark.
